Transcend is the developer for the free RecoveRx for Windows. The program is compatible with Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10. You’ll need administrator rights to make use of it.
The software does an intensive search for erased files in different formats, such as photos, documents, videos and music. Use the simple interface to format or recover data from various storage devices, like memory cards, flash drives, external hard drives, solid-state drives (SSDs) and music players. Two alternatives are EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard Free and Wise Data Recovery.
How to use
Download and install RecoveRx using the standard Windows procedure. Open the software and click ‘Recover’ on the left. From the list that appears, select your device, and click ‘Next’. Use the tick boxes to select the formats of the files you need to recover. RecoveRx supports photo, video, document and audio formats.
Click ‘Start’ and wait for the search to complete. A pop-up block will display the ‘Elapsed Time’ and the progress as a percentage.
You will see a recovery result, categorised according to the formats you’ve chosen, with the number of files recovered underneath each category. Click on the numbered links to view the recovered files.
Formating
You can use RecoveRx for formatting (only on SD and CF cards) and StoreJet external hard drives. Ensure you have recovered all deleted files first because formatting will erase all data. Select ‘Format’ on the right and choose the drive letter or memory card. Next, choose the device type and enter a name for the device if you prefer. This name will display if you use this device at a later stage for data transfer.
The default setting is for a ‘Quick Format’, but you can also choose a ‘Complete Format’. Use a quick format if you plan to use the storage device again. A complete format is a slow and secure erasing of all data on the storage device and takes longer.
When you click on ‘Format’, you’ll see a warning: ‘Format will delete all data’. Click on ‘OK’ to proceed and wait for formatting to complete. Never disconnect the storage device during formatting. Once formatting finishes, the software will display a ‘Success’ message.
