Free strategy game
Final Fantasy XV: War for Eos is a free strategy game by Machine Zone, Inc. The action in this game takes place in the same world as other offerings like Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier and fan-made Final Fantasy XI Braver. However, unlike these, the game is more strategy-oriented.
The objective is to build your kingdom, fight wars and play along with friends in multiplayer. This doesn’t mean you won’t take part in RPG-like combat. In fact, it’s one of the game's highlights as you lead your troops to fight different enemies, including epic bosses.
There are two main things to do in Final Fantasy XV: War for Eos. First, you need to develop your kingdom, building structures for which you need to collect resources. This is done in a simple way, with just a couple of taps.
City building and combat
When it comes to combat, the RPG pedigree of this title shows. You have to manage your characters, improve their stats and then fight. However, most fights are automatic, unless you deliberately want to take part in the action with a couple of special abilities.
Good graphics overall
There is a distinctive difference between the 2D graphics for the city-building part of the game and the 3D combat sequences. While the first look fine, the combat is arguably better, since you can appreciate many details a bird’s-eye view perspective doesn’t allow for the first.
The scenery is good and perfectly conveys the devastation, which sets the game's tone. You combat in broken landscapes, ruins and other well-themed locales.
Not really Final Fantasy
It’s difficult to assess whether Final Fantasy XV: War for Eos when considering its title. If you do, you’ll probably think this is just an attempt to monetise the franchise for mobile players, since it’s full of microtransactions. It feels like the characters and dialogues were sometimes applied to a generic game.
If you gauge it as an independent mobile game, it has a lot of good things going on. The mix of strategy and RPG elements works well. Even though the combat is mostly automatic, it’s still fun to watch and engage with.
