Free comprehensive video editing software

Windows Live Movie Maker is a free video editor that is filled with features: music, narration, transition effects, etc. The application is developed by Microsoft for Windows PC computers and laptops. Live Movie Maker has an intuitive user interface that lets you easily import, edit, and save audio, image, and video files to make animated productions.

Is Windows Live Movie Maker still available?

While you can still download the Windows Movie Maker tool, the Microsoft store officially discontinued the platform in 2017. The developers replaced the multimedia utility with the Video Editor version that is included in the Microsoft Photos app.

How do I get Windows Live Movie Maker?

You can get the free download of Windows Live Movie Maker for Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, and Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems. The platform does not contain in-app advertisements to distract you. You do not need to have a technical education nor experience to create your own movie with the service.

The popular program lets you make movies in a tabbed UI that is designed like Microsoft Office applications: Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, etc. You can navigate through the tabs to control the multimedia clips that are on the right side of the screen. The left side of the UI lets you preview your edits in the video player.

User-friendly video editing solution

You can combine photos, music, and videos to produce films by clicking on the ‘Add videos and photos’ icon within the ‘Home’ tab in the menu bar. A window will appear to let you choose your preferred media to import into the app. You can either transfer a single item or select multiple files to upload at the same time.

All of the content will appear in the right portion of the UI after you press the ‘Open’ button in the browser. You can move the black cursor on the media clips to determine which segment in the production is being edited. The preview screen will mirror the media that you select with the cursor.

You can control the player by moving the lever on the timeline bar or pressing the backward, forward, play, and pause keys that are beneath the screen. Additionally, you can use the space bar to start and stop the video. You can click on a specific movie clip to begin editing. A blue line will border a highlighted part.

If you want to cut a piece, then you can go to ‘Edit’ beneath ‘Video Tools’ to click on the ‘Split’ button. The freeware will split the segment into two parts depending on where you put the cursor. If you want to erase certain excerpts, then you can tap the clip to open the context menu and press ‘Remove’ or hit ‘Delete’ on your keyboard.

You can increase or decrease the speed of a video clip by expanding the dropdown menu next to ‘Speed’ in the ‘Edit’ tab. The length of time that a picture appears in a film can be adjusted within the ‘Duration’ dropdown options.

Feature-filled video creator and editor

You can add a transition effect between two multimedia sections. There are plenty of transitions to choose from in the ‘Animations’ area: dissolves, patterns, and shapes, etc. The transition will be added to the beginning of the selected media. You can change the duration of the effect by writing or selecting a different period of time from the dropdown menu next to ‘Duration’.

What is a good replacement for Windows Movie Maker?

iMovie and Filmora are alternative editors that are developed by reputable companies. iMovie is an Apple program and Filmora is a Wondershare software. Both iMovie and Filmora are less intuitive than Windows Live Movie Maker because the command prompts are not as visible. You can alter media clips with all of the applications to split, trim, add text, etc.

Format content to create movies

Windows Live Movie Maker is a versatile video editor that can modify and merge audio, picture, and video files to create a custom production. Movie Maker has a simple design that lets you conveniently use all of the functions: narration, visual effects, etc. The editing solution lets you save your creations as a high-definition movie. Various websites are integrated within the ‘Home’ section: Facebook, YouTube, Vimeo, etc.

Movie Maker will not receive new software updates since Microsoft stopped developing the platform. If you need a more up-to-date service, then you can download the Microsoft Video Editor.
