SpellForce: Conquest of Eo Review
Take part in magical warfare
SpellForce: Conquest of Eo is a game of tactical warfare set in a world of fantasy and magic. It is the fourth major installment in the SpellForce series and offers an opportunity to return to the setting of the earlier games for more battles with wizards and monsters.
Compared to earlier installments of the SpellForce series, including SpellForce: Platinum Edition and SpellForce 2 - Demons of the Past, this fourth outing has the same core gameplay. However, it also brings in a spate of enhancements that lend it a more polished feel.
Choose your character
SpellForce: Conquest of Eo starts by asking you to choose from four different character types: Alchemist, Necromancer, Artificer, and Custom Mage. Each character type will command their army in a different way. For example, the Alchemist brews potions to boost troops' abilities, while the Necromancer can summon an army of the dead. You can also choose a location.
March into battle
Your enemies will vary, depending on your chosen location. The hellish Gillyshire has undead creatures, Misty Coast has orcs and swamp monsters, and so on. When the battle begins, you'll have an army with heroes, apprentices, and troops. These are divided into stacks, which have multiple units but only one apprentice or hero.
Monstrous combat
When the battle begins, the game will "zoom in" on a specific area of the map (for example, a building interior), and the fight will begin. As the leader, your job is to maneuver units across the battlefield's hexagonal grid. Ice Golems, Phantom Warriors, and many other magical beings will be at your disposal.
A story-driven game
SpellForce: Conquest of Eo is very story-driven, with on-screen text boxes appearing to detail areas of the narrative. This leads to an "on rails" aspect. For one, the game lacks the randomized maps found in many similar titles.
