Free speedrunner game for Windows
Developer Erik Rosenlund and his team have created Slow Mole, a free 8-bit hardcore puzzle platformer that has a focus on challenging manoeuvres. If you've ever fancied yourself as a little grey mole speeding through a series of insanely difficult challenges, this game is for you. If you enjoy this game, then also check out Meat Boy, Cold Shot and VVVVVV.
Slow Mole has a unique checkpoint system. Instead of simply reaching a checkpoint to activate it, you have to show that you've really mastered that section of the game first. The result is extremely challenging and sometimes involves frustrating gameplay that you're unlikely to get bored with.
Erik Rosenlund, the creator of Slow Mole, has been an animator for a number of years. However, during the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, he found himself with the opportunity to try his hand at creating games.
Who are the creators of Slow Mole?
How is Slow Mole different from other platformers?
The main difference is in the checkpoint mechanics of the game. In most platform games, you only have to successfully reach the next checkpoint to save your progress. This often gives you the freedom of doing the bare minimum to get there.
Slow Mole is much more challenging because you have to prove that you’ve mastered a section before you can activate the checkpoint. Add to this, the choice of two difficulty levels, and you have a game that will push you more than a platform puzzler normally does.
Is Slow Mole safe to download?
If you download it from a reputable source, Slow Mole is completely safe to install on your Windows PC.
It's important to be very discerning where you download it because, like with any other software, less trustworthy sites can bundle the file with unwanted additional software.
What are the benefits of becoming a Slow Mole patron?
If you pay something for Slow Mole, you become a patron, which gives you access to several exclusive benefits.
You’ll be at the front of the queue for the ‘Plus’ version of the game that’s currently in development. This game will be available in cartridge format, and you will be able to order the finished version at a discount. The new version will also enjoy more music, secret sections, and even extra difficult levels to keep challenging you. Additionally, you’ll be able to play it on emulators on NES Classic, PC, and Mac platforms.
Challenging puzzle game
With its 8-bit NES-style graphics, Slow Mole looks like it should be a simple game to play. However, the developer has increased the difficulty by demanding that you must master each section of the game before you can activate a checkpoint. If you're looking for the real challenge from your puzzle platformer, Slow Mole will give you exactly that.
