Return of the SLIMEPIRES! for Windows

Return of the SLIMEPIRES! is a free-to-play adventure platformer for Windows developed by Sophie Holden. Your goal in this fun two-dimensional action game is to survive a horde of slime-like abominations. Humanity has crumbled under the relentless attack of these creatures, you’re one of the last to remain. Humankind is lost, and there’s only one thing left to protect; yourself.  

Return of the SLIMEPIRES! is similar in style and development to Poom, in that it was created with PICO-8, the fantasy game development platform and game console. You’ll enjoy this game if you like 8-bit retro graphics and simple controls. You may also want to check out Security Booth and Cuphead for even more retro-inspired gameplay. 

Escape the horde

Return of the SLIMEPIRES! is set in the distant future in the aftermath of a mysterious and deadly disease. The disease was brought to our shores by a horrible horde of slime-like creatures called the Slimepires. You wake up in Bunker 4103, once the last place of refuge for Earth’s survivors. But it too has been breached by the Slimepires, and now you need to get to the bunker’s safe room to save yourself. 

Controls

Return of the SLIMEPIRES!’s in-game controls are easy enough to master and the game comes with multiple setup options. You can either use your keyboard to control your character, or you can hook up any compatible joystick for an even more immersive and authentic retro gameplay experience. If you use your keyboard, you can play with up to two players simultaneously. Both setups are equally easy, so it’s just a point of personal preference.

As advertised, the game is completely free to download and play. However, if you want to make a small donation to the developer and their future projects, you’ll get some amazing bonuses. This includes illustrations of all the maps featured in the game, as well as a comprehensive gameplay manual complete with details about the various endings you can unlock. You’ll also receive a two-hour-long behind-the-scenes video detailing the effort that went into the game’s development.
