Age of DOOM is a free mod developed by the user hellknight61 for Age of Empires II, the venerable (Real Time Strategy (RTS) game from Microsoft. As the combination of names implies, this mod brings the original Doom demons and assets to the Age of Empires II.
Similar to other fan-made mods like Command & Conquer: Aftermath or Last Alliance: Total War, Age of Dooms breathes new life into the original game. In this case, you play the role of Doomguy in a custom campaign that takes you to Mars, Phobos and finally, Hell itself.
Doom in 2D
Bear in mind this is not a strategy game where you can raise the hordes of hell via soul-harvesting or anything like that. In fact, it’s much more similar to what Doom would have been if it had been made in a 2D engine. You control your character, kill hordes of demons and navigate the different levels like an action RPG.
Doom and AOE2 graphics in the same bag
Even though it looks great when judging it from an Age of Empires 2 standpoint, it will undoubtedly look dated for anyone except hardcore fans of either game. Also, since the modder used Age of Empires 2 assets like towers and tents, the ambience is not all it could have been.
Interesting gameplay features
No Doom game would be complete without weapons. In this mod, your character’s weapons get upgraded as the story unfolds. You start with a standard shotgun and end up with more powerful weapons like the BFG in later levels. There are also some terrain changes as the story progresses.
Great for fans of both franchises
Age of Doom Mod is a well-made, incredible twist on both games. It is, in fact, more Doom than Age of Empires, but it has a great mixture of the things that make both franchises great: point-clicking and demon-killing.
If you’re tired of the standard Age of Empires 2 gameplay, or curious about how Doom would have been as a 2D game, you should definitely try this.
