Arcade 98 Emulator is a free arcade fighting game where players join forces to challenge other players in a 2D environment. It’s an emulator for King of Fighters 98, but the developer clearly doesn’t have a license to provide the game. Besides the hidden warning in the app about illegally playing it, official screenshots are blurry.
If you don’t mind the warnings, you can install the emulator and play King of Fighters 98 on your phone. It presents a joystick and arcade buttons on the bottom half of the screen with the game at the top. For actual emulators of old consoles and games, you can try SNES Emulator SNES9x NES Retro Arcade Games, Arcade Game Hall and MD/Genesis Emulator.
King of Fighters 98
While the app is named Arcade 98 Emulator, it’s actually an emulation of King of Fighters 98. It has exactly the same characters and arenas, and you can perform the same combos. The developer provides screenshots that are blurred and scratched, but it’s to hide the fact that they’ve copied a game they don’t have a licence for.
Retro gaming controls
The first step Arcade 98 Emulator asks you to perform is to give access to your device folders. From there, it will install King of Fighters 98. You’ll have your buttons and joystick at the bottom of the playing screen. It gives the game a retro appearance as if you’re standing in the arcade.
Warning message
An interesting addition to Arcade 98 Emulator is the developer’s small print on one of the screens. Before you play the game, there’s a short arcade menu with details. It clearly states that it’s illegal to play this game without the permission of the original publisher. And yet, you can play it.
Arcade game emulated
Arcade 98 Emulator is an interesting application with conflicting messages. On the one hand, it gives you a way to play King of Fighters 98, just before telling you that you’re not actually allowed to play it.
Legalities aside, the game actually plays well, and you’ll have the same moves and characters as before. You’ll choose your fighters and head to the arena to see who will be the champion of the world.
