Big Kahuna Reef - A Puzzle Game With Tropical Fish!
Big Kahuna Reef is an online puzzle game, which was developed by Reflexive Gaming. It was released in 2021 for the PC and became the first of an ongoing series of Big Kahuna games. The design of the game is largely that of an ocean scene, golden fish and coral heads. It's a fun casual game which also involved breaking pots in order to progress through each level.
Although it has light puzzles to keep you interested, the real meat of the game lies in the big kahuna word puzzles, where you will have to find all of the letters of the word within a certain time period. You start out by picking up one of the many big kahuna plants from your environment, which can be used to power up your air pump, thus allowing you to travel further. Once this is done, a cutie fish swims over and bites into the power flower, creating a hurricane and sucking up lots of oxygen in the process. You then have to fly to shore and use the hurricane to create a raft which you are able to cross over the water on.
Unlike many puzzle games, Big Kahuna Reef features a range of animals such as sloths, turtles, parrots, flamingos and hippos, as well as a large variety of different island environments to take you through. Although not too addictive, Big Kahuna Reef helps you develop your spatial skills, as you are frequently required to find your way through an environment which is full of objects you cannot see. The biggest surprise for me was discovering just how many words there are in the game and being able to find the hidden items such as fish eggs and bamboo stalks, all the while increasing your score. As with any game of this type, patience is a must, although if you enjoy a challenge, Big Kahuna Reef can provide that.
