The King of Fighters '97 is a classic SNK fighting game with a huge roster of 35 different characters to choose from. Best of all, they all come unlocked from the get-go!
The King of Fighters '97 is a classic 2D fighting game, originally released for the Neo Geo in 1997. It is considered one of the defining entries in the series and is well-worth picking up today. Similar fighting games include Streets of Rage 4 and WWE Raw.
Play your way
The King of Fighters '97 offers two kinds of play modes, known as Advanced and Extra. Fans of the King of Fighters series should recognise these two ways of charging your super moves as coming from previous different games. King of Fighters '97 gives you a choice of which one you want to use.
Advanced allows you to stock up to 3 super moves as you build up your power gauge like in King of Fighters '96. Extra mode is more like the '94 and '95 versions: you charge up a single gauge manually over time, before reaching MAX power. These two styles generally come down to preference but having a choice is welcome.
Huge roster of characters
King of Fighters '97 has a huge roster of 35 characters, including secret playable characters from past King of Fighters games. These characters each have their own unique move sets and fighting styles. Combined with the super move choice, there is a huge variety of playing styles.
Classic 2D fighting game action
King of Fighters '97 is a classic 2D fighting game from a bygone era. It holds up surprisingly well for its age, but modern fighting game fans might find some of its systems feel a bit dated. The gameplay is fun and addictive, but overall, the game lacks longevity.
For classic 2D fighting game action, King of Fighters '97 stands as a great choice. However, for a modern fighting game fan, it might feel just a bit too dated when compared to contemporary fighting games.
