IRS2Go is the recommended app of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The current version is compatible with Android 7.0 and higher. It requires permission to access the device’s location, phone (calls or phone log) and storage (photos, media, files or external storage).
IRS2Go lets you check your tax refund status, find free tax preparation services and subscribe to valuable advice. For your safety, it creates a login security code for every session.
Android permissions
The IRS2Go app requires various permissions from your Android device. Qualifying users can use their device’s location to search for nearby Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counselling for the Elderly (TCE) services.
If you accept permission to access your phone, you can call the IRS, VITA or TCE services directly through the app.
Permission for access to photos, media, files and external storage lets you save map data to your phone for offline use. Thus, you won’t have to download the same images and data every time you use IRS2Go.
IRS2Go features
The mobile app gives you a free and secure way to pay the IRS. Through IRS Direct Pay, you can pay from your bank account. You can also pay with your debit or credit card through an approved third-party payment service.
The free mobile tax app lets you prepare and file your taxes and receive a rebate. For personal tax counselling, you can locate a VITA or TCE site and visit them for assistance. The IRS is on social media like Twitter, Linkedin and Instagram. You can watch informative videos on YouTube or subscribe to IRS Tax Tips.
There's an important safety feature that generates a login code for every session from within the app, thus avoiding the risk of receiving these codes via SMS.
Monitor your stimulus refund
Taxpayers can monitor their stimulus within 24 hours on the app using the ‘Where’s my refund?’ tool. You’ll need to provide your Social Security number, tax filing status and the amount claimed on the tax return. The app will show the progress in the various stages: return received, return approved and refund sent.
Prepare, file and check
IRS2Go is the recommended app to prepare and file your tax return. Developed by the IRS, it connects qualifying taxpayers to free tax preparation assistance. And the ‘Where’s my refund?’ tool gives you a simple way to monitor your refund progress.
