Multiplayer battle royale video game
Free Fire MAX is an upgraded version of Garena’s original Free Fire and shares the same gameplay. Work alone or as part of a team to fight other players in different areas to complete various objectives.
Battle royale games are a dime a dozen and tend to be clones of other, more popular games like PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) and Fortnite. Garena Free Fire MAX does share similarities with these games but evidently does something right as it’s incredibly popular, particularly with younger players.
Battle Royale
Each game involves your character parachuting onto an island. You then have ten minutes to meet specific goals or survive against up to 49 other players. You can scavenge for supplies, including weapons, or try to take items from your opponents. Players can use stealth tactics, drive vehicles, or team up with other opportunists.
Freemium
You can download Free Fire MAX from several reputable sources, and it should always be free. However, that’s because the game uses the popular freemium, or pay-to-play, model. The base game costs nothing, but if you want different character skins, better weapons, or temporary upgrades, you’ll need to fork out real money.
There’s always a concern with freemium games, especially ones like Free Fire that are popular with younger people, that they’re dangerous. They can be if you can’t keep a tight rein on your or your child’s spending. Free Fire MAX is a lot of fun and perfectly safe, as long as it’s played responsibly.
Simple but effective
It’s entirely possible to play Garena Free Fire MAX for free, forever, and still get a lot out of it. The short match times mean it’s perfect for coffee breaks. There’s also a chat function to coordinate tactics with team members.
A Firelink feature lets you share progress between this and the original game. There’s also no level cap (there are players above 80), which adds to the game’s longevity.
More than a clone
Free Fire MAX has an install size of around 1.5GB, compared to the original’s 500MB. However, MAX gives the original Garena game a fresh coat of paint and smoother gameplay. It’s fast pace and intuitive controls also help it stand out from the crowd of battle royale copycats.
