A Brief Introduction To DX-Ball

DX-Ball is a free downloadable computer game for both Windows and Macintosh first released in 1996 by Michael P. Welch. The game, originally intended to be based on an early version of the arcade game called MegaBall, is now patterned after older arcade games like Breakout and Arkanoid. In addition to being visually identical to those games, the main feature of DX-Ball is that it includes a programming language, CTSPGames Basic, which allows users to program the various features of the game (such as the winning sequence and game ending). In addition to this, the program also provides two modes of play: Story mode and Endless mode. Although the story mode of the game is simply a sequence of pre-chosen random events, players can influence and manipulate the outcome of the game by changing the initial set of circumstances.

To facilitate this, the program contains a level editor which allows users to build and edit levels. This allows for a much greater degree of creative input; although, this feature does not extend to the level editor of the arcade game itself, nor does it extend to any of the features of the basic MegaSparkite game engine. However, given the huge amount of work that goes into making a typical breakout game (many people consider it to be the most difficult among all arcade games), many people consider the level editor to be a useful feature of the software. The reason for this is that it allows players to create custom puzzles which are then run through the Breakout game. The character generation process of DX-Ball also allows players to select the character they want to play before beginning the game. If you have never played any breakout games before, this feature can serve as an excellent method of getting used to the mechanics of the game and will be a good learning experience.

Beyond these two features of the in-game editor, there are a number of additional features that allow players to make extensive use of the DX-Ball software and the level editor to enhance the experience. A complete list of the features available at the time of this writing includes: ability to save and restore levels; ability to select the type of music used in the game; and the ability to upload your own original music tracks. Other interesting and powerful features of the software include: ability to use the mouse to trigger effects and other functions of the characters, and a "draw" mode which make the characters move and appear as if drawn in the screen. All of these features help make DX-Ball an extremely fun and addicting game to play.
