When physics engines collide with 8-bit nostalgia

What happens when you drop the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device into the Mushroom Kingdom? You get Mari0, a brilliant fan-made fusion that completely rewrites the rules of the classic 1985 platformer. It breathes chaotic new life into familiar levels, transforming every iconic jump into a mind-bending puzzle.

By blending the pixel-perfect movement of Super Mario Bros. with the mind-bending spatial manipulation of Portal, Mari0 is a game that transforms simple platforming into a puzzle experience. Goomba-stomping suddenly becomes a game of momentum, gravity, and unexpected wormholes, forcing players to rethink every jump, and trap enemies across dimensions.

Mari0’s mechanical precision of this recreation is incredibly impressive. The developer, Stabyourself, meticulously cloned the physics of the original NES title, ensuring Mario jumps and slides exactly as you remember. However, the addition of the portal gun completely shatters traditional level design. Instead of navigating platforms, you are bypassing entire obstacles, flinging Koopas across screens, and using momentum to bridge massive gaps.

Splitting space

Adding up to three extra players online or locally escalates the game into absolute, glorious madness. Four-player cooperative play turns well-planned strategies into hilarious accidents as players accidentally trap each other or misplace crucial portals. Beyond the main campaign, the robust level editor, custom downloadable map packs, and dozens of collectable hats provide immense replay value that keeps the community thriving.

Unfortunately, the game struggles under the weight of its own ambitious concepts. Precision aiming with a mouse while simultaneously controlling Mario's retro momentum on a keyboard feels incredibly clunky at first. The chaotic nature of multiplayer often leads to severe screen clutter, making it hard to track your character. Furthermore, certain classic levels break entirely because the original layout never anticipated portal mechanics.

Final verdict

Mari0 is a phenomenal, albeit chaotic, love letter to two gaming masterpieces. While the control scheme takes some getting used to and the multiplayer can quickly devolve into unplayable madness, the sheer creativity on display makes it well worth your time. It is a triumphant testament to indie ingenuity that every retro gaming enthusiast and puzzle lover absolutely needs to experience.
