Motvind Studios is the developer behind HOW WE KNOW WE'RE ALIVE, a mystery game for Mac. You can download it for free or pay a small amount for the Deluxe Edition to access wallpapers and backgrounds, the soundtrack, a digital artbook and the original story script.
You are Sara, an aspiring writer, who returns to her hometown after being away for 10 years. You must explore the town and meet old friends and even enemies. Discover new perspectives and find the actual reason why a treasured friendship has fallen apart. Another similar game you can try is Insignia.
About the game
The game is only an hour and primarily story-driven. It uses a point-and-click interface with no puzzles to solve. You’re tasked with exploring the town and meeting people from your past. Through your interactions with them, you try to find out the story of your friend Maria and how she died.
It features authentic conversations, a great soundtrack and an immersive story. The emotional game gives a new perspective on small-town life.
Download, install and play
Download the ZIP file, extract the contents and install the game from the included installation file. When the game opens, you have four options at the bottom: New Game, Options, Load and Quit.
You play the game using keyboard shortcuts. Use WASD to move in different directions and use your mouse to click on objects. For example, if you click on a table, you may encounter memories about Maria, like her favourite dish to order at the cafe.
The story
Sara was never happy in the small town of Härunga and left as soon as she could. She got so involved in her new life that she seldom reacted when Maria reached out to her by SMS. After Sara receives news of Maria’s death, she returns home to attend the memorial service and discovers how their friendship started falling apart.
Through her interactions with different people, Sara gets to know Maria again and finds that it’s possible to be happy living in a small town. But she’s deeply ashamed of the part she played to destroy their friendship.
