Sandboxie Plus: A Fork of Sandboxie
Screenshots
Sandboxie Plus is an open-source fork of the Sandboxie program, now actively maintained by David Xanatos. Originally developed in 2004 to sandbox the Internet Explorer browser, Sandboxie is a sandbox-based isolation software. Sandboxie Plus addresses various problems encountered in the initial release and introduces more improved functionalities.
Sandboxie is a utility tool that allows you to run applications in a controlled and isolated space. This highly-protected environment prevents any changes from being permanently applied to other programs and data on your computer. It provides a safe space to test, play, and utilize apps without the fear of harming your system or losing any development progress or data.
The development of Sandboxie was discontinued in April 2020, leading to the creation of Sandboxie Plus by David Xanatos. This new fork fixes the issues and security holes present in the original Sandboxie program. It introduces a more advanced Qt-based UI, SandMan.exe, compared to the old MFC-based SbieCtrl.exe UI.
Sandboxie Plus has essentially overhauled and addressed the majority of bugs and issues present in the last update of Sandboxie. However, beginners to this type of program may find it challenging to run apps in Sandboxie Plus, despite its modern graphical user interface. To fully utilize its potentials, users may need to search and study more.
Despite being a project fork, Sandboxie Plus undoubtedly functions better than the original ever did. Its developer is committed to providing enhanced functionalities and more protected spaces for users to test and tinker with untrusted programs. However, beginners may experience a steep learning curve when using this software.
