Gameplay, graphics and characters
purrgatpry is an interactive novel game where you click on objects or characters to interact. You use your keyboard and mouse to play. The game features hand-drawn objects, all in black and white, with characters in bright colours, like green and orange. Click on any object to see more information in a pop-up block. The text is in an easy-to-read script.
When you interact with characters, they offer you specific options. You can access your history at any time to see the information you’ve gathered and the characters you’ve interacted with previously. You’re challenged with different tasks to perform if you want to continue. For example, you’ll need to find a key to unlock a door. You can check your current task at any time from the to-do menu.
The dialogue appears natural and helps to display the personality of each character. The text is light-hearted and often funny. If you make the right choices, the game even has a good ending where you go to heaven.
Additionally, the cast is primarily LGBTQ and even features a cat.
The game offers a few features. It lets you increase the text size with an example to see the changes. Then, you can adjust the music and SFX volume and choose if you want to play in full-screen mode. Select a window size and a voice speed. Turn on self-voicing or turn the to-do list on or off. There’s also an Items menu for objects you have found.
In purrgatory, you have various tasks to complete in the afterlife. These tasks are quite challenging, as there are few hints to help you, and even interacting with the different characters doesn’t always help you to find a solution. Despite this, the delightful characters motivate you to keep on trying.
