Off Day is a free visual novel game for Mac where you can donate to the developer if you enjoyed it. It features point-and-click mechanics, and you’ll spend most of your time looking around rooms for items. When you find essential memories, your character takes a photo and adds it to the album. Similar games include Lore City: Alkahest and Samorost 1.
Some memories require you to make a choice that advances the plot. The story unfolds in each scene, revealing a touching story that may leave you with a few tears. One of the best features of the game is that you can pan around the room to find objects without reducing the image size.
Touching story
When you start playing Off Day, you’ll discover a character in bed with her dog thinking about the day ahead. Despite the title, there are some plans, such as meeting online with colleagues. With your day set and ready to begin, you look around your room.
From this moment on, you can explore various scenes to find objects. When you click on an item, the character reflects on memories and what it means. Whenever you find one of importance, or you make a decision, the memory becomes stored in the album for later.
Browser or download
You can either play the game on your browser or download it to your Mac device. You’ll have the option to donate funds to the project, or you can skip and simply play. If you download it, you’ll have better performance, but the developer does reveal how to boost your browser’s abilities.
Graphics and audio
The graphics in Off Day look superb, with a slightly animated atmosphere. There are sparkles on objects you can interact with when you move your cursor over them, making them easier to identify. You’ll even find a PlayStation 1 in one of the scenes, which is a lovely touch. The audio is mostly soft music, matching the protagonist’s name: Melody.
Taking the day off
Off Day is a beautiful game that won’t take you long to complete. However, the memories will make you want to look around your home to see which objects mean the most to you.
It’s a fun point-and-click adventure that will be hard to forget when you complete it. You may want to play it again to make other choices and see how it impacts the ending.
