Survival horror game
The Devil is an indie game that places you in a horror scenario and has you explore its fantastic world, seeking to survive. It's well designed and highly detailed, delivering a wonderful player experience.
The Devil is a classic survival-style horror game. The developers name iconic titles such as Silent Hill and Resident Evil as their inspiration. However, the adventure they created still manages to be authentic and uniquely engaging.
Story-driven
In the game, you take on the role of a Lifter taking a Spire on your way home. However, something goes wrong, and your Spire breaks off from the herd and heads to a cursed swamp. You leave it to explore the haunted world in which you're now stranded in.
The world-building is top-notch, fleshing out each character and having you take your time going down to the swamp. While it lacks the hype of modern horror games, the care the developers took with the smallest elements makes the story even more appealing.
Straightforward mechanics
You can play this game on your Mac and Windows PC using a keyboard or a gamepad. The controls represent simple actions you can take, including movement, interaction, and gun usage.
Even with the simplicity of available activities, the gameplay is quite tricky. Luckily, the developers posted several cheats on their page, letting you enjoy unlimited health, ammo, gun repairs, and restarting the game regardless of the previous save.
Detailed design
The grainy glum visuals set the mood, which the story unfolds rather well. The cover artwork resembles a piece from fantasy literature, while the detailed plot paints a picture of a massive, frightening world that has you in its claws.
The sound design suits the narrative well. It's also well developed and authentic, with realistic footstep noises, ambient sounds, and several eerie original tunes written to fit different story segments.
A well-developed tale
Similar to Darkwood, The Devil is one of the rare indie games that pay so much attention to the world-building. The gameplay is punishingly hard but extremely gratifying, making this one a must-try for horror lovers.
