Free deckbuilding game
Slay the Spire is an online deck-building game that, as of 2020, is available on both major mobile platforms, as well as PC, Linux, and Mac. Slay the Spire launched in January 2019 and recently came to Android in February 2020.
How to play
Before beginning, you must choose from four characters: Ironclad, Silent, Defect, and Watcher. From there, a map will appear with two paths. Enemy, mystery, and shop icons line both tracks. To go far in the game, choosing the route with the most enemies is a robust approach. Defeating enemies gives you strength, coins, and card choices.
You can choose a path with fewer monsters and more shops and mysteries; however, you’re more likely to run out of gold. For each monster you face, you’ll have a hand of ten cards with which you’ll fight.
Cards
Slay the Spire has three types of cards: attack, defence, and special abilities. At the end of each match, you can pick one card from a group of three. Once you’ve made your deck choices, you cannot replace them until after your battle. You choose as many cards as you want to attack for each play, and your character will do the rest. While you cannot use a card’s ability in a mystery, some mysteries offer the option to sacrifice cards.
Mysteries and shops
Mysteries are saddled between fights, moving you through so you can enter the next battle. Each puzzle gives you two or three options to solve it. From there, you move forward into whatever is listed on your path. Since this is a fighting-focused game, the mystery aspect slows the game down, as do the shop levels.
Top-class deck-building
Slay the Spire is a game for deck-building players. It contains plenty of monsters to take on and advancements to achieve, and for this reason, we recommend it only for those who love intricate card games. You can also try Magic: The Gathering Arena for Android, and Hearthstone for Windows.
