Embark on a deep-sea exploration
Inspired by Iron Lung—a submarine-themed horror game from David Szymanski—Rusty Barrel is a free-to-download program that was developed in an impressive feat of three days. Moreover, this horror title is also an entry for Ludum Dare 54, a game jam event.
Created by KenForest, Rusty Barrel takes place in the titular submarine and the player is tasked to procure and deliver minerals while navigating the deep, dark depths of the ocean that is teeming with jellyfish and other marine creatures. Later on, a deep-sea animal will make its appearance to you. Leaks and fires can also occur, so be sure to patch up your submarine to continue with your search. On the other hand—although the controls are a step up from Iron Lung—they still feel a bit clunky, making exploration more difficult for some players.
Despite it being developed in three days, Rusty Barrel is a polished title across the board. Whether it’s extinguishing fires or scouring the ocean floor for minerals, every action you do adds to the game’s immersion. The clunky controls, though, are its flaws.
