Free alternative to Google Play Services

If you prefer not to have Google tracking everything you do on your Android device but still want to use Google apps, microG is what you need. It’s a free app developed by Marvin W that replaces Google Play Services.
MicroG lets you use Google apps if Google Play Services has been disabled on your Android device or not even installed. An example of the latter is the current ban on Huawei Android devices using Google services. MicroG is a modified version of core Google services and gives you complete privacy control. Another app with the same function is Open GApps.
What is microG?
If you’re not committed to the whole Google ecosystem but want to use Google-owned apps, microG gives you the freedom to do so. If you disable Google Play Services, that will severely reduce your device’s functionality. For example, you won’t have access to Google’s app libraries, which power much of what Android devices can do.
MicroG recreates Google’s proprietary libraries, letting you use Google apps without going through a Google account. It frees you up to use your device normally, without the tracking.
How do I download microG?
You can install it directly from the microG website or another reliable source. If you’re on a PC, scan the QR code with the device you want to install it on. The microG download page will open on your device’s browser, and from there, you can download the program.
Can I uninstall microG?
Yes, you can. You can remove microG from your Android device by following these steps.
- Look for microG - YouTube Vanced in the apps list
- Long-press on the icon and select ‘Uninstall’
- If you’re using a homepage launcher that protects against accidental changes, temporarily disable it when it shows the warning message
- Long-press on the microG icon again and select ‘Uninstall’ once more
- Your device will show a message asking you if you’re sure you want to uninstall the app. Press on ‘OK’
MicroG will be removed from your device within a few seconds.
A whole new world
Whatever your reason for not buying into the Google ecosystem, microG is a clever piece of software that gives you the best of both worlds. This app lets you access Google-owned apps but remain free of the company’s restrictions and tracking practices. MicroG performs well, so we can recommend it.
