Modern fan remake of Metroid II
AM2R (Another Metroid 2 Remake) is a free, unofficial fan game developed by Milton Guasti, also known as DoctorM64. It is a remake of Metroid II: Return of Samus, reimagined with modern gameplay, expanded content, and a presentation inspired by later 2D Metroid titles. Released in 2016, the project updates the original Game Boy experience while remaining faithful to its core structure, though development has since been officially discontinued.
AM2R builds upon the foundation of Metroid II by incorporating mechanics and design elements from later entries such as Super Metroid and Metroid: Zero Mission. Movement is more fluid and responsive, with abilities like wall jumping and ledge grabbing that were not present in the original game.
Expanded gameplay with modern mechanics
The remake also expands the original experience with new areas, enemies, and bosses, along with updated enemy behavior and artificial intelligence. These additions deepen gameplay while preserving the original objective of hunting Metroids across the planet SR388.
Improved navigation and map system
One of the most significant upgrades is the inclusion of a full in-game map system. Unlike the original Metroid II, which relied heavily on player memory and limited guidance, AM2R allows players to track explored areas and better understand the game world. This modernized navigation system improves accessibility without removing the sense of exploration and isolation that defines the Metroid series.
A faithful and expanded remake
AM2R successfully modernizes Metroid II by integrating improved controls, expanded content, and updated presentation. It retains the original game’s structure while enhancing it with features drawn from later entries in the series. Overall, AM2R remains a highly regarded fan remake and a strong reinterpretation of a classic Metroid title.
