ALZip is an open source archive and compression utility for Microsoft Windows based operating systems. ALZip is intended for use on Microsoft Windows, Macintosh Mac OS X and Linux. ALZip is also able to decompress Zip and RAR files.
Since ALZip no longer provides the same functionality as the earlier Zip and RAR technologies, there has been much discussion on how to achieve optimum use of ALZip. There are now many forks of ALZip which claim to accomplish some of the same goals as the original ALZip with additional features. The major change in fork ALZip comes in the form of support for multiple architectures and operating systems. The latest fork adds the ability to decompress Zip and RAR archives. Additionally the fork increases ALZip's security levels by allowing users to create different options that will restrict access to particular Zip or RAR archive sections.
A great advantage of ALZip over other open-source archive formats is the ability to compile ALZip with a Visual Studio C# compiler. This capability allows the creation of ALZip libraries which can be executed in Visual Studio C# applications. The ability to compile and execute ALZip code in Visual Studio C# applications provides the programmer with the ability to create and deploy an application that uses the ALZip file extension. These capabilities have made ALZip one of the most widely deployed free, open source solutions for data storage.
