Westgrove is a free indie psychological first-person horror game for Windows. You play the role of a video freelancer that sells his work to news channels and television shows. You go to a creepy town called Westgrove (previously known as Derryfield), where you discover the mysterious past in a petrified forest.
Developed by Spring Rabbit, the game has an interesting design and graphics based on the PlayStation 1 gaming experience. The style of the story is formed around the 90s ‘found-footage’ movie style. Fans of the horror genre should also try out Silent Hill: Little Baroness, Slender: The Eight Pages, and The Baby in Yellow.
The petrified forest
You decide to explore the forest, where you soon realise that you’re going around in circles. The game becomes more unsettling when day turns to night, and there seems to be no escape for days. As you run around in the dark with only a flashlight to guide you, creepy noises seem to follow you wherever you go.
Find out about the town and its people
The game is designed to successfully lead you in the right direction, where you can discover the clues and unnerving past of the town and its decreasing population. Clues are provided through the multiple documents you’ll find lying around. The documents tell chilling stories and give insights into the characters that wrote them and the town’s history.
Key game characteristics
The game’s design is cleverly put together with a well-thought-out map that’s large and well-built. The eerie silence throughout, and the creepy sounds in the background add to the game’s intensity.
A horrifying game filled with fear and nostalgia
If you’re a fan of the Blair Witch lost-footage style movies, you’ll enjoy this thrilling indie horror game that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The game promises loads of fear and nostalgia with the PS1-era video game graphics.
No matter where you go in this game, you constantly feel like you’re being watched, and your limited field of vision that warps while you walk through the chilling forest effectively gives you the sense that the foliage is closing in around you. The developer has managed to capture an amazing atmosphere combined with a fantastic build-up to the well-placed epic scare at the end.
