Resident Evil 4 APK for Android: A thriller and puzzle solving game
Capcom is bringing the acclaimed Resident Evil 4 to Android phones, but can it live up to the glory of the original? We played it extensively to find out.
The spirit of the game continues
The Android version stays true to the essence of the original: story, characters and overall gameplay. You're still Leon Kennedy and on a mission to rescue the President's daughter from a creepy Spanish village full of infected natives. The controls are now designed for touchscreens, using virtual buttons and joysticks. These work well most of the time, but lack the precision and feel of a real controller.
A visual step back
Visually, the game has been scaled down to work on mobile devices. Some details are less sharp and parts of the environment look simpler. Despite this, the overall artistic style and atmosphere of the original game shines through. The sound design, a vital part of creating suspense and fear, is still excellent.
How to play
The Resident Evil 4 gameplay - exploring, solving puzzles, managing resources and intense battles - remains as captivating as ever. The game is still difficult and requires careful planning and clever use of weapons and ammo. However, the touchscreen controls can be problematic and lead to frustration during chaotic fights.
The game's performance varies depending on your phone. On newer, high-end models, the game runs smoothly with few issues. However, on older or less powerful devices, you may experience choppy visuals, lag, and longer loading times.
Extras and in-app purchases
The Android version includes some bonus features not found in the original. These include extra weapons, outfits and a "Mercenaries" mode where you can fight waves of enemies for points.
Unfortunately, the game also has in-app purchases. You can buy in-game currency to upgrade your weapons or purchase healing items. While not necessary to finish the game, these purchases can make it easier if you're struggling.
A good, but not perfect port
Resident Evil 4 on Android does a good job of bringing a classic game to a new platform. For the most part it captures the spirit and gameplay of the original, but the touchscreen controls and low visual quality keep it from being the ultimate experience. If you can overlook these issues, you'll still find an exciting and enjoyable survival horror game that's well worth your time.
