Pitfall! is an arcade-style platform game developed by David Crane for the Atari 2600 in 1982 and published by Activision in 1983. The game is themed around a jungle adventure theme, and the player must complete a series of obstacles and puzzles in order to advance to the next level. The game involves sliding under rocks, scaling trees, avoiding obstacles such as venomous snakes and buzz saws and more, in order to complete each level.
The game is played in first person view from the perspective of Pitfall Harry, who is playing the role of an orphan whose only chance of survival rests on finding the previously buried powerful artifact known as the Golden Shower. To access this hidden location, the player must navigate his way through the underbrush, avoiding obstacles on the way and searching for the Golden Shower. If it is found, this will unlock a staircase leading up to a wide entrance where a wide variety of creatures are waiting to attack Pitfall when he comes close. Along the way, various artifacts will fall from above, providing Pitfall with the means to progress further into the jungle.
The game has two versions for the Apple IIgs and the Motorola Motoroi devices, both of which run smoothly. For those who own the Motorola Motoroi and wish to have the option of downloading Pitfall! for free, the software can be purchased through their respective stores for a price of $4.99 each (the same as the other two versions of the game for the Apple IIgs). On top of that, users of the Motorola Motoroi can also play via the Internet from any place that has an Internet connection, as long as they have purchased the iGoogle mobile app or use one of the other apps that support the iPhone's Web browser.
