Free Android fighting game

Devil Fighter Dragon X is a free-to-play fighting game for Android released by indie developer Palladin Games. This game represents a distinctly new direction for the developer, as their previous apps have been primarily in the dictionary and translation genre. As visually appealing as this game seems to be, it does skirt the precarious line between glorification and being a rip-off as it uses such terms as Super Saiyan, which is protected under U.S. copyright law.

To avoid any association with the potential legal drama between the creator of the DBZ franchise and Palladin Games, I’d suggest opting for the original game instead of Devil Fighter Dragon X. You can play Dragon Ball Legends by Bandai Namco for free from your Android device, and you’ll have a much better gameplay experience. If you like the Tekken-esque gameplay, you could also opt for Tekken Tag Tournament, another free alternative by Bandai Namco.

Visually striking

Devil Fighter Dragon X is incredibly visually striking at first glance. That is until you notice how eerily similar its characters and settings are to those in the Dragon Ball Z franchise. This is another potential copyright infringement waiting to happen. Nonetheless, the game features a balanced use of saturated and dull colours, creating a visual equilibrium that doesn’t tire your eyes out as you play.

Gameplay

If you’ve played Tekken or Mortal Kombat, you’ll instantly recognise the gameplay mechanics of Devil Fighter Dragon X. If not, the gameplay is simple; move toward or away from your opponent on a two-dimensional stage and issue blows to your opponent or defend yourself against those that they issue. There are numerous power-ups and bonuses within the game, and even the possibility of taking the form of an SS, or Super Saiyan, of various ranks.

Provided that your character has enough S-cells within their body. Oh wait, that’s in Dragon Ball Z. It’s so easy to confuse the two games because there are so many unfortunate similarities between them.

Play it while you can

Given how quickly copyright disputes can get incredibly ugly, I’d suggest playing this game while it's still available. In a rare occurrence for the Android market, the issue with Devil Fighter Dragon X doesn’t lie in the quality of the game.

Rather, the issue presents itself in the legality of the use of so many trademarked assets and features. The game is incredibly striking and relatively fun to play, and the developer updates it with fair regularity so that it does not become stale.
