Free networking utility for network administrators
Free Port Scanner is a free utility created by Nsauditor for use on Windows networks. It allows network administrators to connect to all networked PCs and check the status of ports on each machine. The IT professional can also find out what services each PC is running and check for vulnerabilities.
The app sends a message to specified ports and monitors the responses received. The IT administrator can then resolve any issues, such as security vulnerabilities, which are revealed by the scan. There are other network management suites on the market such as Nmap and SoftPerfect Network Scanner as alternatives to Nsauditor’s app.
Port scanning is a common technique hackers use to find weak points within a network. Hackers and legitimate IT professionals are both port scanning for the same reason. The only difference is the purpose of the exercise—preventative or nefarious. It’s a constant race against time to plug the gaps before a criminal spot the opportunity.
Why do hackers use port scanning?
Is Port Scanner free?
A limited version of it is available for free, but if you want a complete IT Asset scanning tool, you’ll have to pay. There’s little benefit to using the free version if you need the advanced features.
How do I remove Port Scanner?
As the app is not a Microsoft Store app, you have to uninstall it via the ‘Uninstall or change a program’ section of the Windows control panel. Here are the steps to remove the program:
- Find it in the apps list, right-click on it, and select ‘Uninstall’.
- When the control panel program list opens, right-click on the app and select ‘Uninstall’.
- If you’re asked to confirm that you wish to proceed, answer in the affirmative.
See the open ports
If you‘re looking for a method of determining which ports on a network are open, Free Port Scanner is a great option. The UI looks a bit dated, but it’s simple to navigate, and for IT professionals, that’s key. The scan results make it easy to see the open ports across your network.
Whether you’re an IT expert, or a keen amateur, Free Port Scanner helps you to monitor your network’s security.
