Customizable Firefox-Based Browser with Privacy Tweaks

Floorp, developed by Ablaze (Floorp Projects), is a free and open-source browser built on the Gecko engine used by Firefox. It emphasizes customization and privacy, aiming to give users more control over their browsing experience. While it shares many features with Firefox, Floorp distinguishes itself with interface flexibility, reduced telemetry, and additional options that appeal to users seeking a tailored environment.

One of Floorp’s primary strengths is its approach to user interface design. It allows adjustments that go beyond what Firefox natively supports, such as vertical tabs, movable toolbars, multi-functional sidebars, and split-view browsing. These features make it easier to adapt the browser to different workflows, whether for productivity, multitasking, or personal preference.

The browser includes several privacy-oriented modifications. Mozilla’s telemetry and data collection are disabled, giving users a cleaner slate. Settings also allow toggling features like WebGL and WebRTC, which are sometimes used for fingerprinting. While it does not reinvent tracking protection—it relies on Firefox’s Enhanced Tracking Protection. Its open-source nature also adds a layer of transparency, letting technically inclined users review the codebase.

How does Floorp stand out from Firefox?

In terms of usability, Floorp balances accessibility with flexibility. The setup process is quick, and the interface feels familiar to Firefox users while offering more configuration out of the box. Features like displaying QR codes for current pages, supporting Progressive Web Apps (on some platforms), and side-by-side tab views enhance functionality for niche needs.

Platform availability is another key factor. Floorp runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, with both x86_64 and some AArch64 builds supported. There is currently no mobile version for Android or iOS, which may limit adoption compared to other browsers. It also faces the challenge of differentiation—many of its customization options can be replicated in Firefox with extensions.

A niche but capable alternative

Floorp is best suited for users who want a Firefox-based browser with extra customization and fewer data-collection concerns. Its interface flexibility, privacy tweaks, and compatibility with Firefox extensions make it appealing, though its lack of mobile versions and occasional stability hiccups are limitations. For desktop users looking for a balance of personalization and privacy, it stands as a promising alternative in the open-source browser space.
