Cresstch! - An LCD game recreation
Cresstch! is a free game that aims to recreate the style and gameplay of LCD handheld games that were popular in the 1990s. Like these physical handheld games, Cresstch! features a static background with an array of fixed images that darken to show what is currently on screen.
While this game can be likened to something like Fishing Craze in the sense that the gameplay is very basic, the gameplay of Cresstch! is far more simple than even that. There is one game mode, and a player can only expect a minute or two of gameplay from the game.
The premise of Cresstch! is extremely simple. The player controls a cartoon rabbit who appears to be helping someone with their work. The person they are helping throws a box in the direction of the rabbit, and the player must time their jump to catch the box, after which they give it back to the person.
With every successful catch, the speed of the throw gets faster, creating a slight difficulty curve for the player to overcome. That being said, the game is not difficult, and it is unlikely any player will not be able to complete the level. If the player does miss a catch, they lose a life. When all their lives are lost, it is game over.
The game is presented within a hand-drawn handheld game console, taking inspiration from LCD handhelds of the time. The rabbit is controlled by clicking the two movement buttons on the handheld UI, with one button for jumping and another for giving the box to the person. The game can be set to fullscreen mode, where the handheld frame and the game itself take up the entire screen.
