Expanding Horizons is a free game for Windows by developer Faustto. This title is very strange, and it would be suitable to label it as a muscle-growth RPG. Come again? Yes, you read that right. Featuring only women, what you do here is modify the stats of the character while performing some experiments.
Its retro-style pixel art reminds you of RPGs like UNITALE and Mimi and animals, but that’s where similarities more or less end. You won’t roam the world or fight other characters in this title. It’s all about muscle growth and watching the results of your actions.
RPG mechanics for something else
You interact with Expanding Horizons in a typical retro-RPG fashion. You check pixelated screens with pixelated characters. For example, you have an “Incubator” screen where you mix parents to create a new female. You select workouts by changing different stats.
You can create potions with different items the females bring you from their outings, such as mining. This allows you to change them to improve their stats such as beauty, height, abs, arms and others. All this is done with menus, so there are basically no gameplay elements aside from this.
Minimalistic is an understatement
Graphics are almost non-existent. Aside from a few pixelated characters and some items, the rest is text menus with different info, such as stats and actions you can perform. One strange exception is the woman you “develop”, which is fully detailed in high-resolution quality.
All the action, if you can call it that, happens in a pixelated room with just a bed, similar to a dungeon (just in case the game needed more creepiness).
Not for everybody
Expanding Horizons is hard to recommend to anyone except those inclined to enjoy developing muscles in a woman and seeing how she transforms. If you aren’t that person, this is definitely not for you. Even if you have such inclinations, this is a subpar experience.
This is partly thanks to the strange mixture of old graphics and the female model, which looks like a cheap superimposition, exactly like those low-quality Chinese items that show photoshopped people in a backyard. Also, there’s little more than menus and stats, so there is not much “gaming” to be performed here.
