A Review of SmartSniff (IP Traffic Monitor)
SmartSniff is a powerful, freeware packet capturing tool that is available for both Windows and Linux. This particular program can be used for any network related traffic, such as email traffic, port scanning, reverse proxy server, and reverse email lookups. The program comes with a freeware download application and is made available for Windows only. The testing of SmartSniff on a Windows machine has not been finished yet, however, an editor on a Windows PC was able to test the program.
With SmartSniff you can capture any packets of data sent or received using your computer network adapter, which will include; ICMP Echo Request, ICMP Echo Response, TCP packets, ICMP Packet Flow, TCP Source Address, Destination Address, icn Congression, and others. These packets can be stored in your Documents folder, or you can export the captures to an FTP site for further analysis. SmartSniff comes with a very comprehensive log recording functionality. You can configure it with different logging levels, such as error, warn or critical. SmartSniff can be configured to record all traffic on all interfaces, or to store it on a file for offline processing. The program can also be used to record all traffic that enters and leaves a specified WAN interface.
SmartSniff will capture all packets sent to or received from any network adapter, including; iPAQ Packet Switched Network Adapters, wireless adapters, wired adapters, wireless routers, modems, and others. If you want to run SmartSniff in a loop then there is an optional "loop capture" module included with the program. This module will allow you to run the capture over multiple connections without setting up individual capture sessions for each interface. All traffic captured will be logged and emailed to a regular e-mail address. I haven't tested this feature out yet but it may be of some use to network administrators and system administrators trying to keep track of traffic going in and out of their organization.
