Dassault Systemes, a French-based company that makes products such as the Suomi GA series of small arms and light armor for handheld combat vehicles, announced recently that it has developed an open source computer software program called DraftSight for the Mac. This is the third product in the award-winning Suomi line of user-friendly, adaptable, military-grade computers. D Assault Systems' business is a strategic market leader in the electronic repair and simulation fields of the Defense & Security Industry. The company has been a market leader in the simulation and training of complex technologies for over 40 years, including air navigation, training analysis, digital aircraft control and UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles). D Assault Systems is also involved in the design of electronic systems used by the Department of Defense and NASA. The company's prime objective is to deliver high quality, cost-effective, user-friendly, mission-sensitive training and electronic repair systems to our military, public safety and civilian industries.

Currently, on the Apple Store there are two versions of DraftSight: a free version and a pro version. DraftSight for the Mac offers several features and functions, including viewing in high definition, viewing in real time, displaying one or more objects simultaneously, playing digital and analog audio, printing text and drawing with the built-in Draft pen and viewing other programs and data in either a portrait or landscape mode. In addition, you can view your completed work in different sizes in either landscape or portrait mode, and you can rotate, zoom and scrub your view. The software also offers an optional recording feature for live training sessions. You can also listen to recorded voice lessons and have access to an interactive whiteboard.

However, despite its great many capabilities, DraftSight for the Mac does have some minor drawbacks that I believe are not significant enough to keep me from recommending it. The first issue I have observed with DraftSight is that it crashes a lot while loading the images. Also, while using DraftSight on my Apple laptops with Intel based machines, I constantly get error messages saying that my fonts are too small. Unfortunately, even with these issues, DraftSight for the Mac is still my favorite drafting and graphics card software.
