Ann is a free role-playing horror game that sets you as a student in a school that becomes trapped in the building after hours. There are tons of puzzles to solve, many of which may lead to your character’s death if you get it wrong. It creates a terrifying experience, even with its retro graphics and controls. Similar games in this genre include In The Mountains and Neighbor.
The story revolves around nightmarish events that occur at night in the school. When you interact with items or people, a dialogue box will occur to describe the conversation or thoughts. You’ll need to travel around the school to find clues and solve puzzles in an attempt to escape.
Trapped in a school
Being trapped in any building after hours can be a horrifying experience. Ann takes you on a journey with the school as the premise. At first, everything seems fine while you interact with other students and teachers during the day, which teaches you the controls.
You take a nap at your desk and wake up in the evening, everything changes. It’s simar to the Otherworld in Silent Hill where nothing looks the same. You’ll need to walk through every room to discover what happened.
Gameplay elements
The action buttons are easy to use, and you’ll generally move around from place to place engaging with people and items. In some cases, you’ll need to practice avoiding objects that are trying to kill you. Other situations call for solving puzzles, but using an item incorrectly can lead to your sudden death.
Graphics and interaction
The visuals present a top-down platform approach that’s reminiscent of retro games like Diablo 1. However, the graphics are far simpler and less detailed. Still, it doesn’t take away from the horror atmosphere, as there are some jump-scares and spooky items along the way. The music and sound effects also play vital roles in creating an air of terror.
