Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is a free survival horror game that’s a soft retelling of the first Silent Hill game. It follows the tale of the male protagonist, Harry Mason, as he searches the haunted town for his daughter, Cheryl. However, the world is mostly made of ice, and events don’t follow as they did in the original story.
During breaks in the plot, you’re in a psychiatrist’s room, answering various questions. What you don’t know is that it’s all part of an evaluation that reveals your true psychological profile. The end has a massive twist, revealing that the person telling the story is Harry’s daughter, now called Heather, after the events of Silent Hill 3. For other games in this genre, you should try Sinister Within: Decay and Never Apart.
A horror tale retold
The survival horror game Silent Hill: Shattered Memories originally appeared on the portable PSP console before being ported to other platforms. While mainly made for console devices, you can still find unofficial copies for PC.
The tale revolves around Harry Mason again, who is searching for his daughter in Silent Hill. At first, it looks like a remake of the first game. However, events have slight changes, and the icy environments look entirely different. It’s later revealed that it’s based on Heather’s (Cheryl) warped recollection of what happened.
No combat, just evasive action
One striking difference between Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and the other series games is that there’s no actual combat. Most of the scenes are based on exploration and puzzles. When you come across enemies, you must do your best to avoid them at all costs.
Psychological profile
When you’re not playing the main story of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, you see that you’re sitting in a psychologist’s office. He asks you a few questions, the doctor based on Vincent from Silent Hill 3. When you finish the game, the credits end with a psychological profile based on your choices and gameplay options. What’s scary is that most players found this evaluation to be closely linked to their real personalities.
An icy thriller adventure
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is a wonderful retelling of the first game. It takes you back to Alessa Gillespie’s story based on Harry searching for his daughter. Thankfully, there’s enough of a difference to set this tale apart from the first.
You’ll be thrilled to escape the monsters as much as possible while solving puzzles. You will also receive a psyche profile at the end as part of the experience.
