Get Out of Mars is a free-to-download indie space exploration game for Windows. Step simultaneously back in time and into the future with this 8-bit game that expertly tackles a pertinent idea in modern human society: colonizing Mars and surviving in a hostile environment.
8-bit games have an ever-popular style of graphics. Other 8-bit titles to try include Manic Pietro, Slow Mole, Get Out and Gandalf. Both titles leverage a love for the classic gaming experience from a modern perspective, with characters you can't help but thoroughly enjoy.
The next frontier
The year is 2029. The early Mars missions were a resounding success, and now the real work begins - Making Mars habitable. Unfortunately, somewhere nearby, danger lurks.
The colonists encounter brutally aggressive Martian life-forms that lay waste to their settlements and damage their only way out; their SpaceShip. Your challenge is to help the remaining colonists recover vital parts of the ship to facilitate their safe passage back home to Earth.
Collectables
Get Out of Mars comes feature-packed with equipment to collect to help you reach your goal:
- The jetpack makes it easier to shoot at enemies and lets you jump further.
- Boots let you use the double-jump feature so that you can reach platforms higher than a single jump would manage.
- A SlimeSuit makes it possible to walk safely across toxic perchlorate spills.
You can also pick up numerous keys as you make your way through the game. Each key will open up a different subterranean door, granting access to previously restricted areas.
Another fun pick-up is the DogeCoin. Based on a real-life cryptocurrency popular amongst the likes of notable Mars mission pioneer Elon Musk, DogeCoins promise to increase the colonists' wealth when they eventually return home to Earth. DogeCoins come with their own adorable dialogue box, a clever play on the famous Doge memes, 'Wow, such coin!'
Mars reimagined
Get Out of Mars brings the battle to Mars, in contrast to other references in popular culture that bring Martians to our backyard. The Red Planet is so well thought out in this indie game that it somehow feels alien compared to other titles in the 8-bit category. Get Out of Mars is definitely worth the download and is a pleasure to play.
