The Winbox utility lets you set up and manage your MikroTik Router operating software with a simple user interface. You can use it in simple or advanced mode. It gives similar console functions, although some settings aren’t available from this interface. Developed by MikroTik, the free Winbox software is compatible with Windows 7, 8 and 10. Download it and install the EXE file using the standard Windows installation process.
If you need to create a virtual router instead, try Virtual Router or My WiFi Router.
Simple mode, menu and tools
When you use Winbox the first time, it will display in simple mode. You’ll need to enter the router’s IP address, as well as the username and password, and then click ‘Connect’. You can also add a colon after the IP address and enter the port number.
Under the ‘Neighbours’ tab, you can use neighbour discovery to find available routers. Click on the IP address of any router from the list to connect. Be aware that the software will also show routers that aren’t compatible with Winbox.
Other options available in simple mode are ‘Connect’ or ‘Connect to RoMON’. You can ‘Add\/Set’ any entries under the ‘Managed’ tab. Select ‘Open in New Window’ to open a new window for any device. You can also tick ‘Keep Password’ to save the password for future use.
Winbox offers standard menu options like New, Open, Save As and Exit. It also has various tools like ‘Advanced Mode’ to enable or disable this view. It lets you ‘Import’ or ‘Export’ saved session files, or with ‘Move Session Folder’, you can change where the software stores your session. ‘Clear Cache’ lets you clear the WinBox cache, while you can use ‘Check for Updates’ to find updates.
Advanced Mode
The advanced mode gives you extra options like Browse, Keep Password, Secure Mode and the opportunity to Autosave your session. It will display fields like:
- ‘Session’ shows the saved router session
- The assigned ‘Note’ for every session
- The ‘assigned Group’ of the router
- It shows a list from which you can choose your ‘RoMON Agent’
