Homer’s Homicide is a free, fan-made first-person survival RPG by Double Vision Studios, featuring a hellish depiction of The Simpsons’ life. In this bizarre but unique game, the player assumes the role of Bart Simpson, who’s in charge of saving his family from Homer’s homicidal tendencies.
The graphics look like a combination of more “serious” horror games like Sinister Within: Decay and a bit of silliness like in Poppy Kissy: Final Chapter but of course, with Simpson’s assets and features.
Disturbing setting
The fact that Homer’s Homicide is based on a fun, bright cartoon show is what makes it incredibly unsettling. Surely many gamers would like to explore, for instance, the Simpson’s house in 3D. Few players, however, would have imagined doing this while trying to save their skins from a maniacal Homer. This contrast creates an excellent atmosphere.
Subpar but functional graphics
The game is graphically simple, even though it’s fully 3D. The animation of the various characters is OK. In his cumbersome movements and blank eyes, Homer is scary enough, but some elements like fire or pointers could be improved. It may affect the gameplay at times, especially when you’re trying to work out where objects are or what to do.
Easy to play
Homer’s Homicide is a very simple game to play. The player’s tasks are easy to follow; since it’s a stealth game, you won’t engage in combat. Instead, the player needs to avoid contact with Homer at all costs and explore the area to perform the required tasks. Controlling Bart is very intuitive and responsive. The camera controls are smooth too.
Imaginative use of a beloved franchise
It’s difficult to know if Homer’s Homicide would be a great game if it didn’t feature the Simpsons. As a horror survival game, it’s an OK game with a lot of potential and is fun enough. As a Simpsons game, it’s an excellent take on a venerable franchise.
Some points to improve would be more interactivity with the objects, better animation and better overall quality. Still, it’s a must-try for The Simpsons and horror games fans.
