Perian
On the Mac, QuickTime is a recognisable video application - it ships with every computer. On the web, QuickTime has become old news. Alternative encoding methods have become commonplace, offering smaller file sizes, leaving QuickTime way behind. Perian is an add-on for QuickTime that makes it compatible with a huge range of video file formats. That makes it much easier to watch a range of video content on the Mac: FLV, DivX, MPEG4 and so on. Instead of constantly hunting for codecs or players, QuickTime becomes the "Swiss Army knife" of video players - a phrase its developers are proud of. Once Perian is installed, users see far fewer popups about missing codecs. The content just plays as though it were a native QuickTime file. The only downside is that its support was phased out from QuickTime 10, and Perian is in the process of being put out to pasture. Other benefits include: Broad support for audio files. Subtitle support. Simple options and preferences. Intel and PPC compatible. Grab Perian now before it disappears from the web for good.

Apple iPhoto
Apple iPhoto was first released in 2002 and is the flagship image manipulation software for Mac users. It can be used for editing, printing and sharing digital pictures among users and is usually included as a part of the iLife Suite on Mac computers. With the help of this program users can directly import their pictures from all their scanners or digital cameras or even the internet and save them on the iPhoto Library. Most of the common image file formats are supported and the software also works with any additional plugins with most makes of digital cameras as well as scanners. Users can label, tilt, and organize their photos in ‘events’ or groups. There are also some basic image manipulation tools like red eye filters, brightness adjustments, contrast adjustments, resizing and cropping tools and a few others. The user interface for iPhoto is extremely clean, simple and user friendly program and can be used by a complete beginner. This is especially the case for the sharing features, which can convert pictures into beautiful slideshows with usic from the iTunes library as a soundtrack. These slideshows can even be shared as QuickTime movies. The users can then edit them in iMovie and iDVD can also be used to burn the files to disc. The photo albums can also be synced with iPods. Moreover, they can be viewed on televisions that support such a format and playback option. iPhoto users are even offered digital prints, cards, album volumes etc., but only in selected markets. The program is very slick and makes for an excellent photo viewer as well.

SaveHollywood
SaveHollywood is a Screen Saver module for OS X 10.8 or later. It’s a neat little utility that lets you play movies when your Mac enters screen saver mode. With SaveHollywood you can use your favourite movie as your screensaver, or your can use marketing or promotional material instead. SaveHollywood lets you add and configure your own videos, including Flash, QuickTime and some other formats, that can be used as a screensaver. It can also be used as workaround solution to watch QuickTime videos in fullscreen! Installation is easy and takes a few seconds. As soon as it is installed you can access the app via the Mac system preferences menu. It embeds itself into the Mac user interface and has a few configurable features and settings for you to tinker around with; for instance, you can set up which movies to play and you can choose to create a playlist, which can be looped or shuffled. Overall, SaveHollywood is a very cool idea, which is a clever take on the standard Screen Saver module. If you are in the market for something a bit quirky, rather than the standard slideshow and background imagery, then SaveHollywood might be just what you are looking for?
