Does IMVU Really Work on Mac OS X?
IMVU client, a leading VoIP service provider, has just recently released an update for Mac OS X clients (both Windows not affected) which is currently compatible only with MacOS 10. IMVU Desktop Beta installs a new backend for your computer, which uses your existing authentication information to log you in and access your microphone, speakers, control keys, and screen. IMVU desktop beta requires that you upgrade your current IMVU server, so if you're currently on a MAC computer you won't be able to take advantage of the latest IMVU technology.
To me, IMVU on mac os x is a complete failure, and they are not providing a robust enough client to truly stand up to the competition. IMVU offers their clients the option of IMVU Desktop, which is the minimum system requirement for accessing the various components of their client and accessing the web-based desktop tools that make IMVU what it is today. IMVU clients are also lacking IMVU Webcam, which they state as a very important feature that will be coming in the next major release. For someone who relies heavily on their web cam and video connection IMVU on mac os x simply doesn't cut it anymore.
IMVU also claims that the upgrade will allow you to access all of your existing IMVU account data from your existing mac client, and they provide a technical support line for this claim. I would call their support line's "beep beep" support, because you can contact them twenty-four hours a day and you'll never be able to get through to someone. I spent over a month trying to get my IMVU desktop back on my Mac and was only able to get it working after paying over forty dollars in shipping and handling fees. When I tried their competitor, MyWireless, I was offered an email address with a download link, which I promptly used. Within minutes of activating my account, I was able to log into my IMVU account from my laptop and restore my entire desktop. By far, this was the best support I've ever received from any company.
