Spring Leaves No Flowers is a visual novel filled with personal drama and self-exploration. You can join Manami as she learns more about herself and the meaning of her relationships.
Most visual novels are dating simulators, letting you live through various scenarios with different partners. However, sometimes, stories that explore more themes emerge. One of the most popular, Katawa Shoujo, investigates disabilities, and Our Life: Beginnings & Always has you living through years of the main characters’ lives.
Spring Leaves No Flowers by Npckc focuses on relationships and sexuality, but not in pursuit of these experiences. It's a character drama in a small package, getting more profound and personal with every next click.
Story and gameplay
In the spirit of visual novels, you play this game by reading a story on the screen and making occasional decisions that move it forward. Your choices affect the outcome, with multiple endings that reflect the plot progression.
The story revolves around a girl, Manami, her boyfriend, Tatsuya, and their two friends, Haru and Erika. It starts as a casual, slice of life tale, but soon gets much more intimate and sensitive.
Note that this novel is the last part of a trilogy. The developer advises that you first play One Night, Hot Springs, and Last Day of Spring, and then this one. The playthrough takes around 30 minutes for each.
Graphics and design
This visual novel features simply-designed characters against a bright, cartoonish background. It boasts a mostly-pastel palette that adds to the innocent feeling of the story. The plot is easy to follow, thanks to the crisp design, transparent story fields, and choice markers.
The background music consists of soft piano melodies and unobtrusive upbeat tunes for happier sequences. An independent indie artist wrote the soundtrack.
Short and sweet
Although it’s a bit more concise and less immersive than popular titles with similar characteristics, this is an adorable little visual novel with serious themes and realistic characters. Any fan of the genre should try the series.
