Released in 2020, Neighbor is an old Gameboy-style horror game. The story is short but features multiple endings and outcomes depending on your actions. Created by Horatiu.nyc, you can play it in your Windows browser or download the ROM version for an emulator. It features old-school pixel graphics and done only in shades of green and blue.
A short story horror
Like many horror games made in this style, Neighbor doesn’t give you much of an introduction. You’re just a young woman, moving into your new apartment. It’s on the top floor of a brownstone, and it should have been a lot more expensive than you paid. But why is it so cheap? You’ll find out soon enough!
Thrilling and intense atmosphere
There’s a boarded-up room and a dark basement, and a sketchy neighbour that tries to gaslight you. By your third day in the apartment, you’ve either died several times or somehow managed to make all the right choices. The question is, will you be able to escape the nightmare that haunts the building?
Don’t hesitate to check everything. The game automatically saves your progress, so you can load quickly if you made a poor choice and died. If you’re planning to uncover all the secrets Neighbor holds, you’re going to have to work for it.
Multiple story endings
While the game doesn’t have a lot of play time, you can get a little more out of it than the standard fifteen minutes of play. There are two separate endings, but there are also a few hard to find secrets that expand on the world and the story. To get the most out of Neighbor, you might need to play it a few times to find everything, and figure out just what, or who, it is that you’re trying to beat.
Thrilling but brief
Neighbor is a very short game, despite the multiple endings and replay value. That said, this horror RPG is perfect if you want to play a quick game, or spend a few hours figuring out what secrets it might hold. If you’re looking for a good few hours of classic horror style gameplay, however, this might not be the game for you.
