Batman: Arkham Origins is a free action game developed by Netherrealm Studios who also created Mortal Kombat X and Injustice: Gods Among Us. You take on the Dark Knight’s most fearsome enemies in 1-on-1 combat. Fight your way up to face Gotham’s iconic villains and upgrade your skills and abilities to beat them and unlock new suits.
The game also works as a companion app; linking it to its console/PC counterpart unlocks exclusive content. The game plays similar to Mortal Kombat X and Injustice on mobile devices as you perform combos by tapping and swiping on the screen.
Gameplay
The gameplay is simplified for mobile devices so it can’t be compared to the main title. You’ll need to tap on the screen to fight your opponent and perform combos; you also have a guard button and health boost. When your enemy’s life is low, you can perform a finisher combo, which is a QTE (quick time event) sequence.
In between levels, you’re presented with a map divided into four areas. Each district has crimes to be solved; you’ll need to finish enough of them to unlock a boss battle and clear the section.
Skills and abilities
To beat the most challenging enemies in the game, you’ll need to upgrade Batman’s abilities. You have three categories to upgrade: the assault stance to deal more damage, the guard stance to defend yourself against attacks and the skills category, which unlocks upgrades and new gadgets for Gotham’s vigilante.
Sound and graphics
In terms of graphics, the game is similar to other games developed by Netherrealm on mobile, it looks gorgeous; the experience is fluid if your device can run it properly. However, the sound design is minimal, with no music except for the intro cinematic. The sound basically consists of enemy grunts and effects in the menus.
Fun game with limited replay value
Batman: Arkham Origins has great graphics and the gameplay is fluid and intuitive. If you’re a fan of Batman, you’ll enjoy the experience of fighting the Dark Knight’s greatest foes. This game will keep you entertained for a few hours.
