Document viewing utility
XPS Viewer made by Dolphin Futures, is a Windows-based application developed for handling XML Paper Specification (XPS) files. It runs on Windows Vista and later, supporting the direct rendering of XPS documents in multiple layouts. The program executes core document functions, including page navigation, zooming, printing, and text search.
The software operates as a standalone viewer without requiring additional integrations, but can complement other document management systems. XPS Viewer includes both sequential scrolling and flipbook-style navigation modes. It processes XPS files locally, managing layout rendering and document indexing internally while maintaining compatibility with standard Windows printing and search frameworks.
XPS Viewer loads XPS files into a viewer with two primary modes: Scroll View and Flip Book View. Scroll View fits the page width to the display and requires vertical scrolling for navigation. Flip Book View renders two facing pages simultaneously, supporting page-turning through a mouse drag interaction. Page navigation allows you to input a page number directly or use the built-in search function to locate specific words and phrases.
Scroll or flip
It supports zoom operations that rescale page rendering dynamically without altering file data. Printing is executed through Windows’ standard print subsystem, enabling output of XPS pages directly to a connected printer. Internal indexing allows search results to highlight terms across the document, maintaining consistent navigation throughout. It tracks session state during reading, updating the current page position, zoom level, and view mode until the file is closed.
The trial version includes extended capabilities for document conversion. Files can be exported from XPS to PDF or into common image formats such as JPEG, PNG, BMP, TIFF, GIF, and WMP. However, conversion is performed by rasterizing page content into image-based outputs, which means the resulting PDF files are non-searchable. It requires a paid license to remove trial restrictions. The conversion process runs as a background task, with output parameters set beforehand.
XPS utility
XPS Viewer operates as a Windows-based utility for reading and managing XPS files, supporting rendering, zoom, search, and print functions. Its technical strengths include dual viewing modes, page-level navigation, and integration with the Windows print framework. Extended conversion tools expand output to PDF and image formats but require licensing beyond the trial version. However, it offers non-searchable output from conversions, and restriction to the XPS format without broader multi-format compatibility.
