Underhell Mod is a free mod for the first-person shooter Half-Life 2 on Windows. It aims to improve the game in several ways, mainly via a new story with new game mechanics and areas to explore. However, Unlike Half-Life 2 Mirrored Mod and Half-Life 2: Pathway Through Ravenholm Mod, which make some changes to the base game without completely changing it, Underhell Mod goes the extra mile and brings a new story, new mechanics, and much more.
This mod has been active since 2011 and still gets regular updates, thanks to being highly praised among the Half-Life 2 community.
A new story
The most noteworthy addition in Underhell Mod is that it has a new story. You’re Jake Hawkfield, a special agent moving into a house with your wife. Just as you’re happily settling down, she dies in mysterious circumstances.
This is where the story begins, and later on, you get called to help in a hostage situation in a hospital. It all sounds fascinating. However, at the time of writing, the entire story hasn’t yet been released.
New game areas and mechanics
Of course, the mod features new areas but also exciting mechanics. For example, the central hub is the house, where you’ll find puzzles and mysteries. Each chapter is featured as a different version of the house, with different enigmas and activities.
There’s also the “dreams” area, which you access while sleeping. It serves to enhance the story as well as provide some exploration and puzzle-solving.
Finally, the main story is during the Chapters, which you access from the house. When a chapter is finished, you’re back in the house and go to sleep to progress.
An excellent concept waiting for completion
Underhell Mod is an incredible project that completely reimagines what the original Half-Life 2 and its engine can do. The house, dreams, and chapters are innovative and engaging.
However, it’s still an incomplete mod, with only the Prologue and Chapter 1 released so far, and the last news released by the developer was in 2016. It would be a shame if the project never got finished, but you can still enjoy the prologue and first chapter.
Even if it remains incomplete, the experience as it stands makes it well worth a try.
