Squid Game is a free multiplayer strategy game for PC based on the Netflix phenomenon. Created by Farwal on Itch.io, Squid Game catapults you into the Netflix series’ universe where you compete in Korean children’s games for your survival and a piggy bank full of cash.
Squid Game emulators are all the rage right now, so there are many good alternatives for Windows. Squid Game Red Light, Green Light (Rage Edition) takes the core mechanics of Squid Game and improves upon them. Another great alternative is Glock Game, which reimagines Squid Game as a first-person shooter. If you’d like an arcade game that features the actual animal, you can try Speedrun Squid.
Graphics
The graphical quality of Squid Game is solid. The developer paid incredible attention to the finer details of each environment. Squid Game’s textures are high quality, as are the lighting and shadows. The characters look realistic and move fairly fluidly.
Gameplay
In its current state, Squid Game is mostly unplayable. The game launches without sound, requiring you to fiddle with settings beforehand. After choosing the single-player mode, you’ll be thrust into the first game; Red Light, Green Light. The game works well once you figure out that ‘Shift’ button is the action key for running.
Once you get past the first stage, the game gets more difficult. Multiple playthroughs revealed bugs in Squid Game’s second course, Dalgona cookie carving. The interface changes before you’ve completed your cookie carving, everyone else is eliminated, and you’re essentially stuck. There’s no way to jump back to the main menu, and you’re forced to abort the entire game. Glass Stepping Stones seems to work well, apart from no automatic end screen when you die. The Stairs game doesn’t work at all. There’s no objective; additionally, the end of the course is a literal dead end.
Multiplayer
Squid Game claims to have multiplayer functionality, but there seem to be very few people playing. The games won’t start in multiplayer mode unless there are at least four people in a stage, which rarely happens, leaving the mode unplayable.
Work in progress
While incredible attention to detail was paid to the graphical elements and environment in Squid Game, the game is unfinished. Even in the latest version, there are too many bugs for any of the levels to offer much entertainment, and most of Squid Game’s stages, while beautiful, are unplayable. However, you can still give it a try if you’d like some Squid Games fun on your PC.
