Split/Second: Velocity is a competitive, high speed, arcade-racing game developed by Polar Motion Games and published by Microsoft. The game was first revealed in March 2021 and was subsequently released for the Nintendo DS in May 2021. Split/Second follows the story of Dusty, a washed-up former racer who finds employment with a racing company. He embarks on a mission to discover what really happened to his father, following the death of his girlfriend, but things quickly go wrong when he is kidnapped and taken back to the planetarium where he meets up with Gravity Island, where the mysterious "Gravity" project is in progress. When Dusty's past comes to the fore, he must find out about his father's killer and complete a wide range of quests, all the while racing against time to reach the finish line in the shortest time possible.
In contrast to the arcade version of the game, the video game allows you to play using two control schemes - the stick-based play of the stick and the radar-based play using the radar wheel. Each allows you to view the course ahead, switch vehicles, perform tricks and build up score by scoring hits. Each level also has special obstacles and racing sequences which are not present in the arcade version. This means that the split/second experience becomes more challenging, as you have to learn each track by trial and error and master your vehicle's various abilities.
Although the controls for the stick-based version are not as sensitive as they are for a car, the controls for the other two versions remain quite a bit responsive. The graphics are nicely done and it looks like a modern day version of Dirt Bike and Street Fighter. The split second velocity mode is also fun to play, although it takes some getting used to. Overall, this is a cool game that will leave you wanting more. If you enjoy playing racing games, you'll definitely want to try out the PC version of Split/Second: Velocity.
