MecaNet is an open-source, community-driven project based on the core curriculum of the Xerox Parc project. MecaNet consists of an easy-to-use graphical user interface (GUI), an environment for Rapid Application Development (RAD), rich text editor, a data dictionary, and middleware to access the network and server files. MecaNet is an instructional computer application that can be used by non-technical personnel who would want to learn how to use different aspects of the operating systems. It is free and available to everyone. This product was developed by the Multimedia Consultants in Australia under contract with Xerox Parc, with the support and help from the network and operating system teams at Xerox.
MecaNet is a computer educational program designed to introduce computer technology to developing nations. The goal is to develop a system that can be used in classrooms, training rooms, companies, and by ordinary people in the developing world. The system is intended to complement the existing primary and secondary schools, and to provide a complete educational experience for students in elementary grades through upper secondary school. The classes are facilitated by teachers trained in the use of MecaNet. The book "MecaNet: A Comprehensive Course in Learning Computer Applications in Latin America and the United States of America" written by Jose P. Garcia Lopez, R.Ac., D.Sc, gives an overview of the book, its history and objectives, and the core concepts.
