Gutterball is a 2021 Canadian horror movie directed and written by Ryan Nicholson and starring Edward Theobald, Mel Gibson, and Celine Dion. The movie has been criticized for its violence, including its portrayal of cannibalism. The movie also has been criticized for its graphic portrayal of sexual assault and rape. Nevertheless, the movie did end up earning more than expected at the box office, and it has been hailed as one of the best horror movies to date.
The story begins in a small Canadian town called Portage de Prairie, where high school senior Jack (Edward Theobald) goes out with his friends on a Friday night in order to celebrate his birthday. While hanging out with his friends, Jack witnesses the murder of his friend Debra (Celine Dion), and immediately springs into action. He races across town to find the killer, only to find that the dead girl's body has been dragged into the gutter, which runs under the bridge that connects the two sides of town's main street. Locating the killer proves to be more difficult, and Jack ends up getting trapped under the bridge with the killer, who escapes through the sewers. Frightened, Jack decides to play a game of gutterball in order to find help, but he is stopped short of winning and is left to fend for himself.
Jack and his friends eventually become quite good at the game, and they decide to play a contest to see who can throw the most balls into the gutter, while using the least amount of skill. As the contest continues, they learn more about the origin of gutterball, which has origins much earlier in the year. As everyone enjoys the fun game of gutterball, the search for the real killer is harder, and both the real murderer and Jack continue to pursue them.
